What's included
Session 1 – Morning Day 1
We start with the big picture - why project management has become a core capability across industries and professions, from infrastructure to innovation, IT, and the delivery of complex social and environmental outcomes. We'll explore the four types of projects, align them with the spectrum of delivery approaches (waterfall, agile, and hybrid methodologies), and review key concepts in latest edition of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK). Laced through this session are the principles and practices of the Institute for Collaborative Working - grounded in ISO 44000 - that support collaboration in complex environments.
Session 2 – Afternoon Day 1
Step into 1960s New York with Mencken Madness, our gamified project management simulation inspired by the hit TV show Mad Men. Compete as rival ad agencies navigating the pressures of a live project - responding to change, managing stakeholders, and producing key documents across the project lifecycle including the Project Charter, Project Plan, Status Report, and Closure Report. Beneath the fun lies a serious focus on teamwork, strategic alignment, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative behaviours - critical skills for modern project professionals.
Session 3 – Morning Day 2
This session examines how projects are selected and what information might go into a business case to justify the decision to invest in a new project. We’ll use a conceptual model called the “Why Axis” to identify the strategic alignment of projects and the long-term benefits/outcomes that it supports. We’ll then step through each phase of a predictive project lifecycle, exploring tools, techniques, and practices used across industry.
Session 4 – Afternoon Day 2
This session focusses on scoping and planning projects. Here you'll learn how to broadly define the project during the Initiation Phase using the Project Charter. We'll also explore how to flesh this out in the Planning Phase with the Project Management Plan (PMP) and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Finally, you'll learn how to control changes to scope using Change Control.
